Jesus said, “This is my commandment, that you love one another as I have loved you. Greater love has no one than this, that someone lay down his life for his friends,” John 15:12-13. Jesus showed His love for us by laying down His life, being lifted up on the cross, the penalty for my sin and your sin. Jesus did this so that we may be saved from eternal death by his resurrection. As we return to corporate worship in the time of COVID-19, we encourage everyone here to love each other by wearing a face covering throughout our time in worship. We do this not for ourselves, we do this for our sisters and brothers in attendance. We do this because we love one another. In Luther’s explanation of the Fifth Commandment, he writes: “We should fear and love God so that we do not hurt or harm our neighbor in his body, but help and support him in every physical need.” It is right to be joyful and enthusiastic in our return to corporate worship, but recall Luther’s words, preventing harm to our neighbor and supporting his physical needs shows our love for God as well as each other. That is why in Christian love we ask that face coverings be worn during worship.
