The Fruit of the Spirit is Patience

  • Pastor Bohlken
COLLECT OF THE CHURCH
Father, patience is hard for us; therefore, we ask that You send Your Holy Spirit to create within us a desire to bear patiently our neighbors’ foibles and faults and to be gracious and forgiving with them. Also, enable us to endure suffering, especially unjust suffering, and, in the midst of such suffering to pray, “Thy will be done!” We ask in the name of Jesus, who is very patient with us and who patiently endured suffering for our sake.
Amen!

The Fruit of the Spirit is Gentleness

  • Pastor Bohlken
COLLECT OF THE CHURCH
Father, in this Ash Wednesday Service, may we see Jesus’ example of gentle service; but, more than that, through Jesus’ words about what His example means and through Paul’s words about how we are led by the Spirit, give us the desire and the power to gently serve others. We ask in the name of Jesus, who is gentle and humble in heart.
Amen!

Drinking the Cup

COLLECT OF THE CHURCH
Gracious God, as Moses and the elders long ago beheld God and ate and drank, so in the Lord’s Supper we behold Your mercy, Your forgiveness, and Your making us one in the Body of Christ. Through this Sacrament, help us always to remember Jesus, who lives and reigns with You and the Holy Spirit, one God, now and forever.
Amen!

No Fault in Him

COLLECT OF THE CHURCH
Almighty God, Your kingdom is not like the kingdoms of this world. Instead of force, You reign by grace; instead of corruption, You reign by the truth; instead of favoritism, You reign by serving all. Help us not to fall into the ways of the kingdoms of this world, but to welcome Your gracious reign in our lives; through Jesus Christ, Your Son, our Lord, who lives and reigns with You and the Holy Spirit, one God, now and forever.
Amen!

Lord God, Your Gospel Word supports us through both good times and bad. Forgive us for the times when our words deny You. Restore us, so that the words we speak bless both You and the people entrusted to our care; through Jesus Christ, Your Son, our Lord, who lives and reigns with You and the Holy Spirit, one God, now and forever.

Help us to recognize our betrayals and to return to You by the cross of Jesus, where He paid for our sin with His life, so that our lives may be restored; through Jesus Christ, Your Son, our Lord, who lives and reigns with You and the Holy Spirit, one God, now and forever.

Merciful God, You call us to turn from sin, turn to You, and live. Help us to recognize our sin for what it is, confess it to You, and then receive the forgiveness of our sins accomplished by our Lord Jesus on the cross; who lives and reigns with You and the Holy Spirit, one God, now and forever.

Simeon's Nunc Demittis

†Part of a, "Songs of Advent," series.  A Christmas special:  See Episode #6.
Now Lord, You are releasing Your bond-servant to depart
          in peace, According to Your word;
     For my eyes have seen Your salvation,
               Which You have prepared in the presence of all
                  peoples,
          A light of revelation to the Gentiles, And the glory
                    of Your people Israel.
~ Song of Simeon (Nunc Demittis)
Then Simeon blessed them and said to Mary, his mother:
        "This child is destined to cause the falling and
             rising of many in Israel, and to be a sign
                that will be spoken against,
so that the
                   thoughts of many hearts will be
                      revealed.  And a sword will pierce
                         your own soul too."

Mary's Magnificat
  • Pastor Beck
†Part of a, "Songs of Advent," series.  A Christmas special:  See Episode #6.
My soul magnifies
     the Lord,

and my spirit rejoices in

God my Savior,

for he has looked on the

humble estate of his

servant.

For behold, from now on all

generations will call me

blessed;

for he who is mighty has

done great things

for me,

and holy is his name.
And his mercy is for those
     who fear him

from generation to

generation.
He has shown strength
     with his arm;

he has scattered the proud in
     the thoughts of their hearts;

he has brought down the
     mighty from their thrones

and exalted those of humble
     estate;

he has filled the hungry with
     good things,

and the rich he has sent
     away empty.

He has helped his servant
     Israel,

in remembrance of his mercy,
as he spoke to our fathers,
     to Abraham and to his
          offspring forever.
~ Mary's Song (The Magnificat)

Blessed be the Lord God of Israel/ for he has visited and redeemed his people/ and has raised up a horn of salvation for us/ in the house of his servant David,/ as he spoke by the mouth of his holy prophets from of old,/ that we should be saved from our enemies/ and from the hand of all who hate us;/ to show the mercy promised to our fathers/ and to remember his holy covenant,/ the oath that he swore to our father Abraham, to grant us/ that we, being delivered from the hand of our enemies,/ might serve him without fear,/ in holiness and righteousness before him all our days./ And you, child, will be called the prophet of the Most High;/ for you will go before the Lord to prepare his ways,/ to give knowledge of salvation to his people/ in the forgiveness of their sins,/ because of the tender mercy of our God,/ whereby the sunrise shall visit us from on high/ to give light to those who sit in darkness and in the shadow of death,/ to guide our feet into the way of peace.
~ Zechariah's Song (Benedictus)
